King Charlemagne
Charlemagne was the King of the Franks from 768 to 800 CE/AD. As a king he worked to unite all Germanic people into one kingdom and convert them to Christianity through warfare. Charlemagne did a lot of dirty work for Pope Leo lll while he completed his mission. Pope Leo lll crowned Charlemagne the Emperor of Rome in 800 CE/AD as a reward for his service to the Pope. Charlemagne was the first leader of the Holy Roman Empire (800 to 1806 CE/AD) which covered France, Germany, the northwestern Baltic region, Northern Italy, and the Alps. Charlemagne as emperor worked to sooth tensions with the Byzantium Empire, who did not accept him as the leader of a united Rome. He supported learning throughout schools and a formalized Christian doctrine(written canons and laws followed by all Christians). Charlemagne fostered a renaissance of Roman culture in medieval Europe.
